Vojvodina Football Club celebrates their 111th birthday today.
On that occasion, the ex-member of Vojvodina FC and the oldest player of the Old Lady among the living – Čedomir Sentin, together with Srđan Borovina, a talented youth player and a future star of our club, laid a laver’s wreath at the memorial plate in Temerinska 12 in Novi Sad, at the place where Vojvodina Football Club was founded in 1914.
Duško Grujić, director of the Youth Academy, and Gojko Kačar, the coach of youth categories, as well as numerous members of the Veteran Association of Vojvodina, friends of the club and the media, were present during this special moment.
Before the wreath was laid, the president of the Veteran Association of Vojvodina, Miladin Purać, had addressed those present, and with carefully chosen words illustrated Voša’s greatness through the historical struggle from the very first days of being founded in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
- Respected representatives of the club, respected media representatives, fans and ex-players, welcome to the traditional event of marking the anniversary of our club. For the 10th year in a row, in organization of the Veteran Association and the management of Vojvodina FC, we gather here at the place where our beloved club was founded precisely 111 years ago. And it was founded here behind us, in the tailor’s shop of Sava Šijakov, on March 6th The founders were pupils of the Great Serbian Orthodox Gymnasium (today’s Jovan Jovanović Zmaj Gymnasium), and the renowned citizens of Novi Sad of that time. Vojvodina is one of the symbols, both of Novi Sad and the Province of Vojvodina and represents an institution of great importance.
For 111 years, Vojvodina existed in 5 different countries. They were the only Serbian club that played under that name in the First League of Yugoslavia, before and after the World War II, and that plays in the Super League of Serbia today. Based on the trophies and the results (the ratio of victories and defeats), they were at the convincing 5th place in the ex-Yugoslavia, and in the 3rd place in Serbia.
Out of 85 players that Vojvodina gave to the national selection of ex-Yugoslavia and now Serbia, most of them began their careers in our Youth Academy, or they gained affirmation while playing in Vojvodina. They played and won medals at World and European championships and the Olympic games in which the national selection of Yugoslavia participated, and some of them are famous European players: Boškov, Veselinović, Rajkov, Krstić, Roganović, Pantelić, Trivić, Takač, Sekereš, Svilar, Nikezić, Vujkov, Mihajilović, and many others.
In the European cups, they played a total of 179 games. In all those competitions they won against great European teams, such as: Milan, Roma, Fiorentina, Celtic, Glasgow Rangers, Sampdoria, Rapid and Sparta.
Youth Academy is the greatest treasure of Vojvodina FC and one of the most successful youth academies in Eastern Europe. Only in the last 30 years, the academy gave a large number of players who later played in the national team of Serbia, and who today play in the strongest leagues in Europe, and some of them are: Stepanov, Krasić, Kačar, Jovanović, Avramov, Brkić, Tadić, Aleksić, Sergej and Vanja Milinković-Savić, and many others.
In the last 30 years 460 players played for the first team of Vojvodina FC. Out of all those players, 150 of them began their career in our Youth Academy, and 27 of them played for the national team of Serbia. And because of all the above-mentioned, Vojvodina FC is a great club – Miladin Purać said.
After him, Vladimir Višković, a 93-year-old, and the oldest member of the Veteran Association of Vojvodina, who used to be the club’s doctor in the famous sixties of the past century, addressed those present.
- A special honor must be given to mister Kosta Hadži, one of the founders of Vojvodina FC, whose statue stands in front of our Karađorđe stadium. Also, I would like to say that next year we will be marking 60 years of taking the first championship title. On that occasion, I would like us to make a big event, to invite all the living members of the generation who won the title, as well as those players who won the second championship title in 1989 – Vladimir Višković said.
After laying the wreath, all those present enjoyed a birthday cocktail at the VIP lounge of Karađorđe stadium.
